Active like a Senior

Benefit Systems has launched a pilot programme known as MultiSport Senior, the first initiative of its kind in Poland, to support the activity of people over the age of 60. The primary goal of the programme is to raise public awareness of regular physical activity and comprehensive healthcare at all stages of our lives. The creator of the MultiSport programme encourages all generations to take exercise and refutes the stereotypes concerning senior activity. The pilot programme will last until June 2018.

Within the MultiSport Senior initiative, the elderly can order a card which entitles them to take part in dedicated fitness classes, dancing workshops and special memory training sessions in selected facilities across Warsaw and Kraków. The card also authorises its holder to participate in meetings with a physiotherapist as well as provides access to swimming pools and salt caves. Within the pilot programme, a free-of-charge card can be ordered through a person who has an active MultiSport Plus, MultiSport Classic or MultiActive employee card.

There are no age limits when it comes to regular physical activity. A healthy lifestyle is indicated for all age groups and, in the case of seniors, constitutes one of the most significant factors having a positive impact on their psychophysical health. The MultiSport Senior programme is intended to support the elderly in taking up physical activity under the watchful eye of trainers and physiotherapists. Importantly enough, it also serves to refute the stereotypes that sport is only for the young, says Robert Moreń, Communications Director at Benefit Systems.

According to the data by the Central Statistical Office of Poland (GUS), the population forecast results for the years 2014-2050 indicate an advancement of the ageing process within the society. According to forecasts, in the year 2050, as many as 42% of urban inhabitants and 38% of rural inhabitants will be at least 60 years old. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that the elderly undertake physical activity encompassing three elements, namely endurance exercise (2-3 times per week for at least 20 minutes), strength exercise (performed twice a week for 20 minutes each) and flexibility (stretching) exercise, on a daily basis for 5-10 minutes.

Regular physical activity improves the overall health and metabolism, reduces arterial blood pressure, boosts the immune system as well as increases life energy and well being. It is also one of the most important factors contributing to the so called successful aging.
